The 2017 edition of the Bestmed Jock Cycle Classic Presented by Rudy Project, which is an official premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, takes place on 15 July 2017 on the traditional route between Nelspruit, White River and Sabie.
Entries limited to 800 riders.
Following our concerns for the state of the Brondal Road, which span many years now, Mpumalanga traffic authorities have afforded the Jock use of the N4 and an alternative route past the Kruger National Airport for the first stage.
ASG spent weeks fixing potholes and repairing the deteriorating road surface last year prior to the Jock. Mpumalanga Provincial Government also did repairs on the road earlier this year, but it still isn’t ideal. After Consultation with a number of role players and the assistance of Mpumalanga Traffic we have made the call to change the 1st stage route
The change doesn’t alter the nature of the challenge on the first stage and overall Jock, but it does bring piece of mind for the organisation and we thank Mpumalanga Traffic for there support . The Race distance does increase by just over 2km to 44km
All stage start times remain the same and only stage 1 route will change
THE 2017 STAGES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
- Stage 1: Nelspruit – White River: 42km
- Stage 2: White River – Sabie (via Spitskop): 45km

Stage 2: White River – Sabie (via Spitskop): 45km
At 09:30 riders will start tackling the second stage (in the same order as the first). The race moves out of White River onto the Sabie road over Spitskop and will end at the entrance towards Sabie. It’s a 45km ride after which the field will settle down to lunch at Sabie Primary School before gearing up for the final leg.
Stage 3: Sabie – Nelspruit (via Long Tom Pass): 63km
The third stage starts at 13:00 from Sabie Primary School and riders almost immediately hit the first (and only) big obstacle – The Long Tom Pass. The pass is a monster, totaling 12km with an average gradient of 7 percent.
The good news is that – after Long Tom – the riding becomes easier as the stage progresses all the way back to Nelspruit to finish back at the Mbombela Stadium.
